Jami has always had a love of massage and has a natural gift; starting off working on her grandfather at his beauty salon massaging his shoulders and hands for candy money. She was always the friend who would rub your shoulders, feet or head.

Jami has a history of migraines and puts a special emphasis on head, neck and migraine work and research. Her massage is deep, fluid and relaxing. She has come up with and continues to refine migraine massage techniques. She is knowledgeable about helpful products for migraine sufferers.

She often includes stretching areas of concern.

"I love everything about massage, the soothing sounds, smells, relaxation and wellness. I am very passionate about my massage work and believe if I can work on you, you will be back for more."

Hobbies: sewing, shopping, purses & shoes, riding her beach cruiser bicycle, walks, yoga, belly dancing, counseling friends, reading, going to/playing at the beach, researching migraine information, family and nutrition.

What Serendipity Spa had to say about me:

Serendipity Spa welcomes Jami E. Smith, LMP

Jami E. Smith, LMP is the new massage therapist on-staff in Serendipity Spa at Bridgeport Place. Smith’s passion is “helping others feel better”. She has a radiant, engaging personality that inspires confidence. Clients praise her skill.

Styles of massage and treatment modalities include relaxation and therapeutic massage, Shiatsu (a type of massage where it is unnecessary to undress), Swedish, Reiki, Reflexology, and more. A special area of her interest is focused work on migraine relief with the use of ice and essential oils.

Smith has extensive experience as a pharmacy research assistant and pharmacy tech, but longed for a literal ‘hands on’ way to make a day-to-day difference in people’s lives.

Old injuries

Do you have an injury that happened some time ago but just wont stop bugging you. Well here are a few tips to help you mend. As always, you should check with your doctor!
ICE ICE BABY..yes, its not always a pleasant sensation, but its very helpful for those injuries. Alternate ice and heat (10min on followed by say 60 min off a few times a day if possible).
Stretch the area (only if you KNOW you are not doing further damage, again see your doctor). Do some range of motion stretches and activate the muscles.
My final tip is just common sense. Think about your daily life, what movements are you doing that may be aggrevating the area, or even making it worse? Most of us need to stop and think about this. For me, its the phone at my pharmacy job, I know better, but I often lock the phone between my ear and shoulder to keep my hands free to keep working...So now I know why my neck has hurt a lot more than usually lately.
Ofcourse a good massage is always a nice frosting topper to this!
Here is to your health and happiness!

Intraoral massage

Headaches
TMD
Eye Pain
Jaw Popping/Clicking/Tension
Face and teeth pain
Whiplash
These are just some of the things that Intraoral massage can help with.

Latex-free gloves are worn while working inside the mouth to release the muscles and tissue involved in mastication and jaw clenching.

IntraOral Massage gently releases muscles inside the jaw, as a stand alone treatment or added to your current massage treatments, it can be extremely helpful.

I will be attending my class in June and be licensed to perform shortly after.

More information about this little known massage technique will be posted after I attend the class.

Recurring pain or illness might be...

If you experience the same type of illness or pain, it might mean something. And if your tired of it, open your mind and consider these things, what could it hurt to consider it. I will list these generic, without too much specific info or area:

Back problems~
lower (might be)-financiall worries, lack of financial support
Middle (might be) -Guilt, stuffing all "that" in your back
Upper (might be)-Need for emotional support, unloved or not ready to love back

Colds (might be) - too much going on all at once, mental confusion, disorder. small hurts

Even which side of the body means something, or not...its for you to decide.

who treats YOUR migraines?

If you suffer from headaches, the first thing I always ask is "Do you have a neurologist?". This is the first step in getting your migraines under control. You may be seeing your family doc, and thats dandy, they are GREAT at MANY things, but to truly treat migraine, it is my feeling and that of MY Family doc, you need a neurologist and ideally one who specializes in migraine. I had several neurologists before I found mine, and he helped change my life for the better. It took time, it didnt happen over night, but he never gave up, he always reassured me, we would find something to make my life more livable. And he delivered.
My second thing, I offer to let your borrow my copy of "Heal your headache, the 1-2-3 approach" by Dr Bucholz. It is a wonderful place to start and has a 4 month diet that will scare you, but after you do it, you will be so glad you did.
Who is my neurologist you might ask "Dr. Patrick Hogan at Puget Sound neurology". I tell everyone they should give him a try. He definately is willing to think inside and outside the box to help you get your life back! And you will love his receptionist (Roxie).

Blackberry thumb

Maybe you have heard of this already, it was news to me. A relative had a sore thumb, and wondered what we could do about it. I thought and tried a few things, ended up with a simple circular massage around both sides of the joint, the palm and up the arm a little. We were not sure why this happened, she had been playing Wii, or maybe something else? I told her to try icing it.

We later learned its "blackberry thumb" what used to be called "Nintendoitis". Repeatative use injury from small devices like phones for texting or even video gaming that uses the thumbs. Its not new and has been around since the 80's (nintendo been wrecking thumbs since way back, you know you remember getting that hand cramp from hours of mario).

Symptoms of Blackberry thumb include aching and throbbing pain in the thumb or sometimes other fingers and in the wrist.

Now for the treatment, yes ice, NSAIDS (ibuprofen), stop use for a while, splints, and yes massage are all recommended by most health care professionals. There are actual massage sessions that can be designed just to help treat this condition, but like all things, it only works if you help yourself.

As a rule of thumb...
